Art and Crafts Club

The Art and Crafts Club meets twice a week for both junior and senior learners. It provides a welcoming space where learners can freely express themselves through creativity and hands-on artistic activities. In our sessions, we explore a variety of materials and techniques while working on some beautiful art pieces. Learners also have the chance for their artwork to be featured in our annual art exhibition, which showcases their talent and hard work. The club encourages imagination, relaxation, and personal expression, allowing every learner to develop their skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

Dance and Drama

Dance and Drama is a programme offered to Grade 4 and 5 learners to introduce them to the world of stage performance. The learners partake in fun movement and dance related activities, as well as learning and growing their acting skills. Dance and Drama hopes to expose and prepare junior learners for stage productions in their senior years and their future drama related endeavours.

School Production

The School Production is the highlight of the Cultural calendar. Each year, Grade 6 and 7 learners work tirelessly to produce a performance of a high level. Over recent years we have showcased incredible talent from our learners in productions such as Pirates of the Curry Bean, Grease, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

Being part of a school production is an extraordinary journey and each year our learners embrace this experience with passion, teamwork and creativity. Our productions are always a resounding success, leaving our audiences spellbound and proud of the talent within our school.

Debating

Our debating program provides an exciting platform for senior learners to develop their public speaking skills and sharpen their critical thinking. Each year, we proudly enter two dedicated teams into the interschool debating league. These learners commit themselves to a rigorous schedule, working diligently to research complex issues and build their confidence when delivering their arguments. Their ability to present thought-provoking arguments and tackle rebuttals with quick thinking and poise ensures they consistently give their opponents a run for their money.

Sprout Kids

Sprout Kids at WSPS is a nature-based extra mural offered to the Grade 6 and 7 children, it encourages children to connect with the environment through hands-on gardening, sustainability projects, healthy food preparation activities, and creative outdoor learning and projects inspired by nature.  It promotes the growth of important life skills and healthy habits alongside the practical activities, in a relaxing outdoor environment.

Scripture Union

Scripture Union gathers every Thursday during Big Break, providing a vibrant, safe, and welcoming sanctuary where learners can step away from their busy school schedules to explore the Bible and deepen their relationship with God. This dedicated time fosters a positive and uplifting environment where learners can connect, share fellowship, and grow spiritually. Throughout each session, participants are thoughtfully encouraged, guided, and supported by a team of caring leaders who are deeply committed to mentoring youth. By blending meaningful scripture engagement with a community of care, the program serves as a reliable anchor of encouragement and spiritual development within the school week.

Amplified Choir

Amplified Choir continues to be a shining example of what happens when passion meets talent. As our most established choir, Amplified brings energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine love of performance to everything they do. Their recent collaboration with a local artist was a beautiful reflection of the community spirit that drives this group — a reminder that music is always better when it’s shared. Whether on stage or in rehearsal, Amplified never fails to fill the room with heart.

Sing Squad

Our newest choir, Sing Squad is already a breath of fresh air! Born out of an incredible wave of singing talent in our school, Sing Squad is all about embracing the joy of music and making it accessible to every voice. This group is on a journey of discovery, finding their sound, building their confidence, and learning that choir is as much about connection as it is about notes. Fun, vibrant, and full of potential — Sing Squad is only just getting started.

Marimba

Our marimba programme buzzes with excitement across all three bands! Leading the charge are the Wisps, our Marimba A team, who gear up annually to represent us at the prestigious International Steelpan and Marimba Festival in Johannesburg. The Sirens (Marimba B) work hard to participate in the eThekwini Eisteddfod in Term 3, bringing their own competitive spirit and dedication to the stage. And rounding out the trio are the Firebirds — our performance band who live for the crowd. With infectious rhythms and slick choreography, the Firebirds know exactly how to get everyone on their feet. Three bands, one incredible programme!

Media Centre

The library is a vibrant and welcoming space at the heart of our school, where learners are encouraged to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning. Filled with a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books, the library supports both academic growth and imagination. Learners visit regularly to read, research, and explore new interests in a calm and peaceful environment.

Lit Quiz

Learners who love to read are encouraged to participate in ‘Lit Quiz’. The following competitions are held during the course of each year:

• The WSPS Inter-house Lit Quiz (learners work in teams of 4)
• The ‘Kids’ Lit Quiz’ – The Durban regional round of this international competition, founded by Wayne Mills from New Zealand, has been hosted by WSPS since 2023 (learners work in teams of 4)
• The Reading Championship – the top-scoring learner in this individual event is awarded the ‘Reading Champion’ trophy at the Academic Prize Giving ceremony

Speech and Drama

Learners are encouraged to participate in the annual Speech and Drama Festival,

which is adjudicated by qualified members of the Speech and Drama Association of

South Africa.

• Speech and Drama Festival: This is held in the third term and offers a wide range of individual and group categories.
• Speech and Drama Evening: A limited number of learners who have achieved outstanding results at the festival are invited to present an item at an evening event.
• Primary Schools’ Showcase: Adjudicators select a number of exemplary candidates from each of the schools at which they adjudicate festivals during the course of the year to present an item at a showcase, held at WSPS in the fourth term.

Spelling Bee

Our learners are offered the opportunity to compete in Spelling Bees at differing

levels of difficulty, ranging from:

• The annual WSPS Inter-house Spelling Bee
• The DBE Spelling Bee (English medium)
• The South African Spelling Bee, which incorporates all 12 official languages in SA as well as foreign languages
• The African Spelling Bee (as part of Team South Africa)
